Sunday 7 Mar 2010
Quite a warm day with NE winds around 25 knots (see Seabreeze® graph below). This kept or sent a few members home but a few of us went out anyway for a squirt. Bill Cheal says you have to let kids sail in a stiff wind otherwise they never learn how to do it, then are in trouble when a southerly change hits unexpectedly. Accordingly, young Brandon Becker (aged 14) went with Troy, Danny, Stan and Craig for a spin across to Pipeclay Point and back. Tristan shit himself when a big gust hit so Craig had to take the H18 back in. It would have been such a handful anyway. Brandon did a great job, with some advice from Troy, and made it across to Wallarah Bay and back without mishap. As he weighs only about 50kg that's a good effort.

Thanks to Seabreeze for the graphics.

Sunday 21 Feb 2010
A beautiful day, hot, with 10-15 knots NE, with twelve skippers fronting, nine cats and two monos. Chris had a go on his mono, and Geoff took his son Cody for his first sail. Stan sailed over on his Hobie 16 with his son Danny. The rest of us were on fourteens, Maris, Windies and Paper Tigers, so we had good competition between us. Darcy organised a handicap start which turned out well as we all finished within ten minutes of each other. Darcy came first, with Troy not far behind, and Steve crossing the line only 2 seconds behind Troy. These were the back markers, and they came in only a few seconds ahead of Richard on his Mari, his first outing this year. I couldn't believe how high he could point on that thing.
Stan was next, with Des, Adam (also a back marker), Danny and Col all within a few minutes of each other. Poor old Graham fell over and couldn't right it due to water in the mast, so the rescue boat, ably crewed by Neil and John, towed him to shallow water. The only other sailor was Brandon Becker, who turned 14 today, but is yet to finish a race this year. Today he had a cramp. Poor little bugger!
Dianne did double duty as Canteen and Duty Officer so thanks for that Di!

Sunday 14 February 2010
A very pleasant day of sailing with NE breezes of 7-10 knots. Just the eleven of us but good close racing, after Darcy, Andrew and Stan gave the rest of us 5 minutes start. Stan was on the H16 so he won the day. He didn't manage to get out on the wire much due to the light winds. Andrew won the 14s with Darcy close behind. Aaron was next followed by Barry then me. I had a top day, being first after the second lap due to Baz and Stan taking the long way to the leeward mark. Didn't work. Then, as Garry said, I managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by going to a quiet corner. Ian Brown, Garry and Col Ware were next with Graeme well back on his first sail on a cat. Brandon gave up and DNF.
Thanks to Neil who gave up his sailing to drive the boat for us. Thanks also to John Raynor and Bill Cheal, and Louise who did canteen duty and made yummy salad rolls.

Sunday 31 Jan 2010

Last week was the Herons Championships. No information except they all had a good time and everyone was happy, especially us.
This week there were about 20 boats and the wind was a brisk ENE of around 15 knots (see Seabreeze® graph below) with the temp about 28°C. Daniel Johnston is back after a prolonged absence, not long enough according to his fellow racers, and won convincingly (four minutes ahead of Darcy, so that says something). Good to see other lost souls like Tony Tui and Brenton. Steve H turned up on a Hobie 16 today with his son-in-law but he still has his Tiger at home. They had a questionable day after blowing over backwards during a tack. Garry was out on his new Paper Tiger but still has to get used to a smaller boat, as he fell off thinking the boat was wider. Col had a swim too when he fell off and the Windy sailed away from him. Luckily the Rescue Boat crew, Terry and John, found him floating in the middle of the lake and took him back to his overturned cat miles away. Aaron had no luck either when his tramp failed. Some of the juniors DNF, like Grant, Nick, Jordy and Brandon, while Henry powered round the junior course to win the Jrs. The results by class are as follows:

Class Skipper Time
14' Cats Daniel Johnston 46.06
  Darcy Wilson 49.50
  Tony Toohey 50.25
  Brenton Curran 50.30
  Troy Bennett 53.20
  Stan Dixon 1.12.10
  Danny O'Shea 1.16.59
  Garry Robinson 1.19.50
16' cat Steve Halliday 1.14.07
Monohulls Glenn Bond 1.31.42
  Adam and Ryan 1.29.49
  Bob Stephens 1.33.38
Juniors Jordan Makin

Sunday 17 January 2010
Yeah, sorry for no report last week. We started a race then in 15-20 knots but skippers were dropping out like flies, so only two cats perservered, viz. Adam and Aaron, who deserve a medal given the conditions. Adam came in first, while Aaron cartwheeled his Maricat but was up and on his way again in 5 seconds (he says). The monos stayed out, but as there was no finish boat or anything I can't tell you who it was.
This week, 17/1, we were all rigged up and ready to go when the reports came in of a big southerly change coming, and this was backed up by banks of storm clouds, so we packed up and went home to avoid damage and electrocution. But we did have an excellent rigging and de-rigging practice, and a short sharp storm did arrive. Seabreeze® Norah Head has apparently shat itself, but the Nobbys Head station recorded the following graph, a couple of hours later (a gust to 43).

Sunday 3 January 2010
A quiet rainy day so soon after the seasonal festivities, only 10 boats fronting. To save putting the motorboats in, we set a course around the Pipeclay Point marker (I know it's illegal), and put in a couple of laps. I think Stan won on his H16, which is not unexpected after his stirling efforts in the regatta. That's all the results I have, but the other news is the re-appearance of some old faces (I'm sure they won't mind me saying that) namely Ian Brown on a Maricat, and Sue, in her little mono. Sue says she was a member in 1987 and 88. Welcome back!
On the Australia Day weekend we are hosting the Herons championships over two days. I'm sure Barry will let us know more details soon. This sort of event is one of the mainstays of our financial existence, so your assistance will be appreciated.
May I also mention our little offspring kayak club? This is one of the fastest-growing leisure pursuits in the country, so if you like being on the water and getting some exercise, check out our website here.

TSC Xmas Regatta 27-29 December 2009
The Toukley Sailing Club Xmas Regatta is in full swing this week. The weather has been quite rainy which probably kept some sailors away, however eleven hardy skippers fronted up for the two races held on Sunday afternoon. A south-easterly of 8-10 knots provided a pleasant sailing environment with no dramas.
Stan took line honours on his H16 in impressive style with Rodney doing well on his 14' Maricat. No monos today.
On Monday the winds were a bit livelier and changing from SSE to West at lunchtime. The first race in the morning was a starb'd course, but the first race after lunch was port due to the wind going to the west, and the second race in the bracket was run on starb'd again due to the wind swinging back — confused the hell out of some people! In the last race of the day the wind picked up to 15 knots plus, causing havoc among the fleet. Mick went out in the Cherub, but broke his tiller. Adam's Windy broke a Windrush clip which failed due to metal fatigue (had been cracked on one side for some time leaving only a tiny cross-section of metal to hold the mast up) so under the strain it let go. Craig and Tristan were heading in due to tiller problems when it capsized, luckily close to shore so they let it drift in. Bob Cat tipped over his H16 and was unable to right it till Stan sailed over to help (jump on Bob's boat, get it up, chase Stan's boat, jump back on it again). Darren Schmidt's Windrush took out the first race on Monday, beating everything else. In the big wind though, Chris and Bill on the H16, giving away about 100kg to Stan, came into their own and powered ahead to win by minutes. Young Aaron's Bumblebee also did really well, keeping up with Darcy and Troy. There were monos with Arie's Impulse doing well.

Results are available here

Sunday 20 December 2009
With the weather somewhat calmer than last week, the 10 knot easterly was enough for some good racing between the sixteen boats to front the start line.
Stan was on his Hobie16 today and took off never to be headed. Laurence and Graham on their 16 weren't in the race due to some pointy problems (it wouldn't).
For the smaller cats it seems Paper Tigers are the way to go with Steve Halliday winning in his. Aaron did a good job on his Maricat to come second, with Adam forgoing his 505 to skipper a Windy into next place. Barry had a good day for a change doing quite well on his Mari with Des's paper tiger not far behind, and Danny only seconds behind him. Col Ware on his Windy came miles back on his second outing on it, but at least he finished which is more than Brandon did on his PT after he got lonely and bored. Troy started and was going well but disappeared during the race.
Jarred Robinson did the juniors course while Glen came first in the other monos with Bob very close behind and Grant and Henry doing a great job in the Red Roo.
Thanks to Lois Smith for the work in the canteen, including cooking all the snags for the BBQ, and thanks to whoever brought the yummy cakes and stuff for our Xmas party. Thanks also to Bill and young Terry in the Start Boat and Terry M and Andrew M in the rescue boat for their work today.
See you all at the Xmas Regatta next Sunday. NOR on the home page.

Sunday 13 December 2009
Excellent sailing conditions today, if you like some action!

Twenty knots for the whole race — a few sailors tipped over, including Darcy, though he was back up before the Tigers could catch him. Aaron headed for home after his capsize, literally! And new guy Col Ware on his Windy for the first time made hard work of it too, but plugged on while he had any strength left.
Darcy won by a couple of minutes from Troy, with Andrew Holly a few minutes behind them, after also going for a short swim. Laurence and Graham's H16 came in ahead of Stan's H14, with Danny last and a lap down, but at least I finished and didn't crash. Very invigorating sailing, and so easy to get back home in the southerly!
Glen and Bob campaigned their Impulses and loved it.
Next week is the Xmas Party so there will be a BBQ and bring some snax if you like.

Sunday 6 December 2009
A good N/E breeze of around 15 knots kept us going nicely all day. As many of the big cats were playing away we all sailed together with the monos having a slightly later start.
Steve Halliday had a good day on his paper tiger beating Warren's Windy and Darcy's Maricat into first place. Then came Laurence and his Dad Graham on their H16, followed at a respectful distance by Craig and Tristan on their H18 with outrigger seats. Stan survived a broken jib halyard to finish in front of Danny to round up the cats.
In the monos, M. Brown, a visitor from Lightning Ridge (?) on his Impulse, finished 2 seconds ahead of Glenn's boat with Bob's Jaska very close behind. Mick's tub didn't quite finish, neither did Barry's Maricat, which had stiff jib blocks. Mmmm, nasty!
Terry and John personned the rescue boat, while Bill and young Terry were the Start/Finish team. Terry The Younger is also doing a great job instructing the kids in sailing.

Sunday 22 November 2009
This was supposed to be a club championship day, but sadly it didn't happen. The weather was atrocious, with 42°Celsius and a screaming westerley that ensured there was no relief from a sea breeze. Never-the-less the kids got out and had a ball all morning, and boats were readied for duty. Adam got there at 7.30am, even tho he had no crew, and John Raynor was there not long after. Craig rigged his big cat, but in the end no-body raced. Later the wind died down, but the temperature did not.
Thanks to Julieanne and Anthony who were on duty and did their best. Shame, but another week before summer so maybe it'll be cooler next time (huh!).
Danny

Sunday 15 November 2009
Another great sailing day with southerly winds from 15-19 knots (as per Seabreeze®). No big boats there today due to regattas elsewhere, but the fourteens had a good time. With just the Support Boat on the water we started ourselves and finished round the 8kt marker. We had to start again when we found that not everyone knew where the wing mark was, or what direction we were supposed to be going. This was Darcy's fault, and he got lost again during the race, costing him the lead.
So, Steve on his paper tiger was first, followed by Troy, then Darcy, closely followed (10 minutes later) by Danny and Stan, who had a great tussle for the whole race.
There was plenty of discussion before the race on whether we should go out or not, but luckily sense prevailed and we made the most of a fantastic sailing day. I recommend it! Thanks to all who supported us on the water and at the clubhouse (including Louise).
Danny

Sunday 8 November 2009
An excellent day of sailing! NE breezes of about 10 knots, overcast but warmish. Sixteen boats hit the water from Sabots, to Hobi 18s. Neil's boat didn't make it that far as he forgot some of his rigging. Bugger! So he went in the Start boat with Bill and Anthony - thanks for that you chaps! From memory, Kershy and Leah won the big cats, with Daryl and Matthew next, and Jonjay and Brian close behind. Stan sailed his H16 one-up which was a good effort. In the fourteens, paper tigers made up most of the fleet, but Darcy's Maricat was first, with Steve and Andrew close behind. Then came Des's tiger, Danny's Windy and Barry on his Maricat. The Windy with its Corsair jib was able to round up all the paper tigers on the runs and reaches, but fell down badly on the works. When Baz makes it to the start on time we should have some interesting racing at the back.
Adam and Ryan on the 505 are pretty unbeatable in the monos, followed by Mick and Di on the Cherub with its 4.5 ft centreboard while Grant on his Laser did well on the big course. Jordan and Henry had fun in the juniors.
We finished up with a sausage sizzle to celebrate our new kitchen. Thanks to Terry and John for their offshore duty, and to Mrs Makin and Lois for their efforts in the canteen.

Sunday 1 November 2009
A meagre turn-up of enthusiastic sailors, and quite a lot of kids, were greeted by a fairly stiff breeze. By the time we made it to the start a 20 knot NE breeze was making a real sailing day of it (see wind report below). Neil and Bill in the Start boat copped quite a pounding before they were able to seek refuge in the north-east corner of the lake. Terry and John also did stirling work in the launch. Garry nose-dived twice on the runs, and Danny did a graceful back flip on the Windy while tacking. Aaron managed to keep the Maricat upright which was pretty damned good. I don't have the results, if there were any, but I saw Glenn coming in earlyish after I think winning the monos. Bob must have finished the course as he was out there for a long time. Sorry for the lack of detail but I had my hands full. Thanks to those guys who were on duty for us. We enjoyed the vigorous conditions, even those of us who DNF.
Next week we're having a BBQ to celebrate a very successful Laser Regatta. Everyone welcome.
Danny

Sunday 11 October 2009
Despite the low numbers and lack of wind, buoys were put out and a race was started. Only one triangle was completed and the race was terminated as there were concerns about the weather. We took the placings at the wing mark. They were as follows: Cats: Stan, Monos: Grant, Bob Stephens and Juniors: Henry, Jordan and Andrew M. Bob was sailing an impulse that he has rebuilt which he bought from Budgewoi Sailing Club. The Cherub started as well but was taking on water and headed for home early on.
Julianne
Stan sailed over and had to be towed home due to no wind. (from Barry)

Sunday October 4 2009
As it was a long weekend many members were away at regattas. With only about ten starters we (Darcy) decided to make a custom course — from a marker off the clubhouse, to the marker off Pipeclay Point, two laps, with a run down and a work back. A handicap start meant we all finished within minutes of each other. Brenton was first across the line, followed by Darcy, with Troy and Steve H close behind on their paper tigers.
Stan got taken by surprise by our early start and joined the race from home. A north-easterly breeze of around 10 knots gave us a very pleasant sail with no dramas. Lois was kitchen volunteer today and made some delicious meat and salad rolls. Thanks Lois. We didn't need to put motor boats in but thanks to Barry, duty officer, and Terry and John for standing by.
The renovated clubhouse is looking good. The men's toilet cistern is working and there are new shower curtains. The balcony is finished and will be a very popular spot in the summer. Well done all volunteers!
Danny
PS Don't forget, next weekend the 14' cat regatta at Mannering Park. Point-score races as usual at Toukley on Sunday.

24 September 2009
Hi Everyone!
Last weekend saw a great start to the first point score race of the season with 23 boats making the start line. Well done to all those who participated and racked up the early points. Danny O’Shea our resident webmaster has been away on holidays. I am sure you will start to see each week’s results on the Club website now that he has returned. The weather provided some nice wind for the afternoon. let’s hope that trend continues.

Our thanks to Louise Becker who did a great job in looking after the canteen last Sunday.

For those who have not been able to make it so far the renovations to the Clubhouse are going well. The verandah is finished apart from a coat of paint to the timbers and the Kitchen is almost complete and serviceable as is. We expect that the kitchen will be complete within the next fortnight then we can all settle back and enjoy the season’s sailing.

Most people would be aware that Troy Bennett has stepped down as Club President. This note is to request any nominations for President to be advised to the Club Secretary.

Last but not least, the Sailing Club will be holding a meeting at 7pm next Tuesday evening 29 September at the Clubhouse to discuss the preparations that need to be put into place for Toukley Sailing Club to host the lasers at the Club on the weekend 24 & 25 October 09. We would appreciate whoever is able to make the meeting to come along as the Lasers weekend will be a major fund-raiser for the Club.

See you on the water next weekend.
Barry Smith

13 July 2009
hi all,
what a productive weekend we just had. from the blank canvas to something taking the shape of a kitchen. darryl, anthony, grant, jj and myself got there early to get some boats out so the sparky could get underneath and fix up, replaced most of it, the dodgy wiring that kept blowing fuses. anthony, grant and myself started to put the cupboards together whilst darryl and jj started to put up the battens for the false wall. i went to work and by the time i got back at 12.00 all the cupboards had been done before antho and grant went to gosford for winter training and all wall studs up. danny was up on the roof scraping rust off before applying a coat of ormonoid to it. andrew machan helped out all day as well as coming down on sunday to continue his good work, thankyou andrew. the rest of the day consisted of finishing the walls and new counter wall.
some photos attached for you to look at. what a mess, all jj's fault.
sunday saw us putting the fibro walls up and the masonite down in readiness for the new vinyl flooring. thanks to all who has helped and who is helping in the coming week. jj went around today and organised the vinyl and some new carpet for the entrance and toilet entrances, thanks jj.
we need to organise a tiler for next week if anyone knows of a good and cheap one, contact me asap
michael (pitsy) is coming up from sydney on friday to install the cupboards and bench tops (supplied by burson auto parts charmhaven).
also the new website by danny is up and running with a new address of www.toukleysailingclub.com looking good danny! [no worries. D]
i had ordered a new wall hanging first aid kit from st john's and it turned up today. my new boss, ken, said to send the invoice to him. thankyou ken. this is a great offer as the kit is $250.00. i have had a talk with ken and he has extended his sponsorship offer in the future. more details when finalised.
cheers
troy

12 July 2009
A good start was made on Saturday to the kitchen, with wall studs and counter frame fixed waiting for tiling panels.
The roof still has much to be done, but about one fifth has been brushed free of rust and painted. This will be done over time, weather permitting. See Saturday's photos click here!

9 July 2009
Next Saturday 11 July the new kitchen is going in and, weather permitting, the roof is being painted. Owing mainly to Troy's efforts, the State Government has donated $10,000 towards the renovations. Thanks to local member David Harris and the Premier's Office for this generous and much-needed assistance to our hard-working club.

5 July 2009
hi all,

does anyone know a electrician who could help out cheaply or for free even. materials will be paid for of course. if you do could you please call or email me asap.
had a phone call from bill cheal on sat morning to let me know that we had recieved a cheque for $10,000 from nathan reece's office for these reno's, which has taken a huge load off the bank balance allready.

June 25 2009
Tonight the old kitchen is being demolished in preparation for a new modern kitchen to be installed. Troy will call for assistance when it's needed. Your help will be appreciated.
Don't forget the AGM is on the 9th August at 1330 hrs. All members should attend as there are many issues to discuss. All nominations for office should be made before the meeting and handed to Bill or Troy. Remember, all positions are voluntary, you won't be press-ganged, so don't let that stop you from attending.

Brass Monkey Regatta June 6-8 2009
BMR photos - click here!
WOW, what a weekend! That's how I started to describe the aussie day weekend with the Spirals Nationals and Heron States together on Tuggerah Lakes, so how do I describe the weekend just gone?
Well i suppose i can start by saying thankyou to every one who helped to turn out what can only be described as a fantastic weekend. A HUGE thankyou has to go to the canteen volunteers, these great people kept everyone well fed with warm food and drinks all week end. Between Julianne and Lois they put in about about 60hrs and that's just at the clubhouse, let alone the prep work before even showing up. Barry Smith even jumped in to give a hand on sunday and monday. Thanks to my father keith and Sharon Kakato who helped on sunday and to my wife Sharon (the sailing widow) who helped on sunday and monday. To Louise Becker for jumping in and giving a hand and Barnacle Bill who made that fantastic soup. To the brekky crew of Brett Holly and Garry Robinson a big thankyou as well.
To the crew out on the water and people who helped out on shore a thankyou is extended to you all. To our commodore Neil (the joker) who along with John manned the alison all week end. John who got to the club early to help get all boats and buoys ready. To Danny, Barry, Rimmo, Brandon T, Richard and Tony K who manned the tuffy a huge thank you as i know it isn't the most weather protected boat and the wind was like ice, thanks again. To Anthony who helped on the start boat on saturday and then on norah homes sunday and monday. To young Brandon Becker who once again put his hand up to do anything and everything he could to help, this young fellow has restored my faith in the youth of today and his mother must be so very proud of him. To Craig who could only give a hand on monday, his only day off for the week end. and lastly thanks again to Barnacle Bill who helped cart buoys and help out on the water (in his own boat), thank you.
To be told by most people who attended that they had a great time and that toukley put on the best regatta they have attended in along time goes along way for me and all the helpers over the weekend.
We had 70 boats registered plus the international canoes of 9 and on saturday i think there was 64 on the water. To see that many boats going around the wing mark together was a spectacle to watch. The format on the weekend i think worked well and with some fine tuning could be used again for other regattas.
Congrats go to young henry makin who took out the junior division with 6 1st places (he had to drop a 1st). Our juniors are growing in numbers all the time and i feel very proud to see toukley sailing doing so well.
To Arie in the mono's who only sailed on saturday but came home with a 5, 2, and a 1st which placed him at 15th out of 29 mono's, the most i can recall at the club for many years.
To all the competitors who braved the conditions i extend a congrats. It's because of you sailors that we do what we do and i enjoy being a part of the team who brought this together for you all.
Thank you to the IC association for giving us the opportunity to host your national championship. I hope we lived up to you expectations and that you all will come back for more racing in the future.
thank you
troy bennett
toukley sailing club president

As an outsider I would like to give a big thank you back to Troy who was seen opening the gate at a 1/4 past 6 in the morning and not leaving till well past 8 each night. Your organisation and the work that you did was the back bone to what was a fantastic weekend for those of us lucky enough to go sailing.
Thanks heap mate!
